I Find Stories That Empower The People Telling Them

I’m a story producer and advocate who creates safety and offers others agency and autonomy over how their stories are told.

I was seven years old when I had my own story told by a nonprofit. In some ways it helped me but in others, it did me harm. I needed someone like me to protect my interests on that shoot. Now I advocate for the safety of others like me.

Humanitarian storytelling has long held the power to help or hurt the people nonprofits are supposed to serve. Not enough conversation is being had about the unequal power dynamics in these spaces, but it’s time that we do.

Why I Do What I Do

My work as a producer has shown me that we all long to be seen and understood. This foundation helps me see people as they are. To trust the way they see themselves. To seek input and ongoing consent from the people whose stories I co-create. I bring all of myself to these shoots from the scared seven year old to the passionate advocate and masterful story producer. I am able to do this well because I know how it feels to be on the other side of the camera.

My Approach To Co-Creative Storytelling

  1. I use a people first, the story second approach. We cannot create impact we desire without taking care of those who share their stories.

  2. I create a safe space for others to share their thoughts without pressure and interruptions.

  3. I use deep listening and empathy skills to gather and guide organizations and individuals on an individual approach toward a meaningful story.

  4. I give people autonomy over how, when, where, and if their stories are told during every stage of the story finding process.

  5. I help organizations understand the healing and transformative impact autonomy and collaborative storytelling can have for the people they serve.
